MENTORING PROGRAM AT GMU WILL “CHANGE LIVES”

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School District may be small, but when it comes to student mentors, it boasts a big number: 100. As in 100 percent.

That’s how many GMU students were included in this year’s newly expanded Mentoring Program, which matches students in Pre-Kindergarten through 5th grade with those in grades 6 through 12. For the district of 369 students, that’s a lot of organization and coordination of schedules and students. But organizers say the payoff will be well worth the effort.

New program should increase student success

A new program aimed at improving student performance is gaining momentum at GMU, thanks to the contributions of faculty and staff at the school and the help of a few local school districts.
The Response to Intervention (RTI) program is being overhauled, and school officials are expecting much better progress, growth and outcomes for students who need help with specific areas of their studies.

GMU welcomes students for 2018-19 school year

 And... they're off! Teachers and staff at GMU welcomed the district's 400 students for the first day of school Wednesday. By 8:30 a.m. the morning's fog had cleared, and the students were hard at work on the 2018-19 school year!

GMU Staff Opens 2018-19 school year

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School District kicked off the 2018-19 school year Tuesday, Sept. 4 with its annual opening faculty/staff meeting on the eve of the first day of classes on Wednesday.

GMUCSD Superintendent Annette Hammond welcomed the teaching, cafeteria, transportation and building & grounds staffs for the daylong gathering, which featured brief comments from GMU Board of Education President Jeremy Pain.

Summer Worker program marks 22nd year

Five GMU seniors-to-be spent their summer working 20 hours a week with the school staff, cleaning and painting classrooms and offices, moving furniture and equipment, and helping with general building and grounds maintenance

GMU gymnasium floor features new finish, eagle

After more than 20 years, the GMU gym floor has a new look.

The opportunity for a change came when it was time to refinish the floor last year. The 20-year refinishing was a standard maintenance project, said Building and Grounds Supervisor Alan Digsby. But it took three failed attempts by the original installer of the floor last year before GMU Superintendent Annette Hammond and the Board of Education opted for another contractor this spring.

G-MU honors teacher and staff members of the year

The Gilbertsville-Mount Upton School District honored its Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year during an assembly on May 1.

The district also honored its lone retiree for this year, as well as those celebrating 10, 15, and 25 years with the district.

G-MU hosts annual cleanup day

In late April, the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton School District hosted its annual Community Cleanup Day.

More than 130 students and staff went into the community and helped residents do a variety of jobs, including painting, raking, weeding, and picking up sticks. Students and staff were at 18 locations throughout Gilbertsville and Mount Upton. The locations were community members who had requested assistance.
