GMU Senior of the Month
Maya Farwell, April 2021
Leaping into her senior year at Gilbertsville-Mount Upton by skipping a year ahead, our Student Council, peers, faculty, staff and community celebrate April 2021 Senior of the Month Maya Farwell as a performer, athlete and academic.
Maya can be a tumultuous tumble of contradictions, self-effacing in one moment and stealing focus with a political opinion or a pratfall the next. Undeniably, Maya is generous with her commitments and she has made innumerable contributions to the GMU community.
Regardless of COVID-19 constraints, Maya has continued to stay busy this year. As a percussionist, she specializes in snare drum and mallets in symphonic band, plays the drum set in jazz band, and is on quads in marching band. She’s an accomplish cellist, too, with All-County and All-State accolades and on-stage experience with the Little Delaware Youth Ensemble.
A natural performer, Maya also trod the boards in school musicals. She played Fester in “The Addams Family” last year, and her performance as the hilarious Vice Principal Donna Panch in “The Putnam County Spelling Bee” this spring is much anticipated.
While it would seem as if there is little time to do much else, Maya also is an enthusiastic varsity soccer player, has diligently contributed to the accomplishments of the Mock Trial team, and serves our Yearbook Club as copy editor of The Vallerian.
Maya is a relentless and keen academic who challenges herself to reach the highest levels of achievement. She is adept at upending a tame class discussion by requiring more complex analysis. Mrs. McDowall praises Maya’s formidable writing skills, while Mrs. Talbot speaks fondly of Maya’s “expressive communication style.”
Maya’s strengths of mind and character have been recognized by her membership in the National Honor Society. Artistic impulses meet her commitment to civic citizenship in many of her projects, too, including her singular eye for repurposing of fashion and her culinary wizardry.
Bold and curious, Maya was headed for a year abroad in Japan before the pandemic shut down the opportunity. She will represent GMU admirably as she continues her studies and no doubt immerse herself in astonishing adventures.
