Gilbertsville-Mount Upton is collecting clean, dry plastic film until April 1 as we look to defend our titles during the Otsego County Conservation Association’s Plastic Film Recycling Challenge.
We’re asking students and community members to bring a variety of recyclable plastic film to school in an effort to keep them out of our region’s landfills. Students can give plastic film to their teachers (elementary) or class advisors (middle/high school). Community members can deliver items to the main office.
GMU is accepting the bubble wrap, case overwrap, newspaper sleeves and a variety of plastic bags, all of which are typically only recycled through take-back programs offered by grocery stores and other retailers in the state. Plastic bags include bread, cereal, dry cleaning, grocery, ice, produce, salt, wood pellet and re-closable, such as Ziplocs.
GMU classes will compete against each other to collect the most plastic film, with the winners earning a movie day. GMU also will go head-to-head with other Otsego County school districts to see who can collect the most plastic film per capita.
Last year, our elementary school and MS/HS students finished first in Otsego County – with 6.78 and 1.88 pounds per capita, respectively – as GMU accounted for 1,821 out of the 4,000 pounds collected during the challenge. Cherry Valley-Springfield, Cooperstown, Morris, Oneonta, Richfield Springs, Unatego and Worcester also competed last year.
