Awards ceremonies will change this year

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Celebrating student accomplishments as well as accommodating students and families is a priority here at Gilbertsville-Mount Upton. The district goal-setting team, which includes staff and parents, has provided feedback along with the student council, asking that the district rethink how we recognize students for their successes. We’ve all agreed that the middle/high school awards ceremonies needed to be more developmentally appropriate and meaningful for our students.

As a result, we will make the following adjustments to our middle/high school award recognitions for the 2019-2020 school year:

• Students who achieve honor roll or high honor roll will receive a congratulatory letter home and may pick up the actual certificates at the main office.
• Students receiving any other award/recognition also will receive a letter home.
• All award recipients will be recognized in our newsletter and GMU’s social media sites.
• We will no longer host quarterly awards ceremonies. However, every student who received an award during the school year and their families will be invited to a reception in June to further celebrate their accomplishments.

At the end of the school year, we will revisit our recognition program process and engage in conversations to make sure we are meeting our goal of recognizing students and celebrating their accomplishments in a way that is valued by students and parents. Please contact me with any questions or suggestions, and thank you for your continued support and flexibility as we make adjustments to our past practice.

Sincerely,
Heather Wilcox
PK-12 Principal
