GMU has a new sensory path in the balcony of the main gym, behind the bleachers. The temporary installation will be replaced with a permanent one that features durable plastic markers in the next few weeks.
“The GMU Sensory Path will be used for any student who needs a structured break from the classroom.
“It includes sensory-based movements such as crossing midline, jumping and pushing for proprioception, a weighted ball for heavy work. The walkway ends with deep breathing.
“These items all encourage the brain and body to work together to better function in the classroom. Students will be brought to this area by a trained staff member who can help them maneuver the areas and focus on readying their bodies to learn. I thank the special education teachers from K-8 for helping me develop this walkway.
"We are all so excited for our students to have a place where they can get movement in during their school day!”
